The Kandinsky Challenge

Members of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild recently participated in a Kandinsky Challenge. Nine Kandinsky paintings were presented and quilters created a quilt inspired by the painting of their choice using solid fabrics. Many of these quilts are being shown in an exhibit at the Machine Quilters Showcase at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas. If you are in the area, take some time to visit the Showcase. There are so many beautiful quilts and if you are interested in machine quilting, you'll be amazed by the details and artistry in each quilt. The show continues through Saturday.

Overland Park Convention Center
6000 College Blvd.
Overland Park, Kansas
Friday, May 18 - 10 AM - 6 PM
Saturday, May 19 - 9 AM - 3 PM

If you can't make it to the show, enjoy Carla's photographs of each quilt at Lollyquiltz.

KCMQG Retreat

The KC Modern Quilt Guild held its very first retreat at the beginning of April. We met at the lovely Spring Hill Suites in Lawrence, KS for a weekend filled with sewing, shopping, snacking, and very little sleeping.
The retreat started on Friday afternoon in the ballroom. It was so much fun to sew and visit with friends. Inspiration was everywhere: in the hotel decor; on the design walls that went up quickly; even on a big screen that displayed Flickr images of beautiful quilts. Toni Caro had us laughing after dinner at a fun "left-right" swapping game and at the end we got to open a package of fabrics with a little gift inside from a fellow quilter.
Carla Timberlake and Denise Best each hosted a wonderful class on Saturday. They are fantastic teachers and we were so lucky to have an opportunity to learn from them. Actually, it was so easy to share and learn from everyone around us the whole weekend. Jaime showed some of us how to clean and oil our machines and Kristin amazed us with her Zentangle sketches. We even introduced some of the hotel staff to the wonderful world of modern quilting. Little tips and tricks were easy to pick up when had to opportunity to sew together all weekend.
It was so fun to be downtown Lawrence! Great shopping and restaurants were close by, and we even witnessed Massachusetts Street fill with fans as KU won the Final Four.

We were completely spoiled with the generous donations of so many people and businesses that made our fun giveaways and prizes possible.

Many thanks to:

Inspiration of the Week - improv boy quilt

If you're one of those quilters who struggle to come up with ideas for boy quilts, this inspiration is for you! Straight from Erica at Kitchen Table Quilting, this improv boy quilt is a great mix of "manly" colors and fabrics! We think a boy of 8, or maybe any boy, would love this quilt.

And it's backed in Parson Gray's Curious Nature, no less! What a great choice!

Inspiration of the Week - Miniature Quilt

This week our inspiration is in the form of a trapunto mini quilt. Have you tried trapunto before? Trapunto is the act of adding extra batting to specific areas of a quilt to make it puff out more.

Greta of Greta's Quilting Studio did a fantastic job on this miniature quilt. We love the bright colors and how the fusible webbing she used makes it look so perfect! And the white back absolutely makes the quilting stand out.
