Elizabeth Hartman Workshop Sign Up!
Hi, guild members!
Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson is going to be our speaker for our September meeting. She will also be teaching two workshops. Normally, our workshops are on Friday and Saturday, but Elizabeth's workshops will be on Wednesday and Thursday
since she is traveling to St. Louis to speak at their Modern Quilt
Guild. We are holding this workshop in the room where we have our
meetings, so we have quite a few (25) spots to fill. Therefore, we are
opening this up to the public next week. Details about each workshop are
below and as well as images of the projects that Elizabeth has
provided. If you have any questions, let us know.
Workshop 1: Fox and Hedgehog
Description:
In this workshop, students will learn how to make the Fancy Fox and
Hazel Hedgehog quilt blocks, which feature conventional piecing using
rotary-cut fabric pieces and simple diagonal seams. The blocks will be
combined to make a 16" x 26" pillow cover or mini quilt. Students can
add optional glasses appliques, and the workshop will cover Elizabeth's
favorite method for making these appliques.
Date: Wednesday, September 9th.
Time: 5-9 pm
Location: Roeland Park Community Center, Multipurpose Room
Cost: $85 members, $95 non-members
Details:
A copy of Elizabeth's Fancy Fox and Hazel Hedgehog patterns are
required and need to be purchased before the workshop. Elizabeth will
not have copies of the patterns to be purchased. The patterns are the
original Fancy Fox and Hazel Hedgehog, not Fancy Fox II and Hazel
Hedgehog II, which are for making much larger versions of the blocks.
Patterns are available in both print and pdf formats. Elizabeth will
provide supplemental handouts, including the glasses applique patterns
and fusible web for making the appliques.
Supplies:
Fancy Fox pattern; Hazel Hedgehog pattern; 2 pieces at least 5" x 9"
each of fabrics for the fox faces; 1/4 yd or several large scraps white
or similar light fabrics for fox muzzles; 3 pieces at least 10" x 10"
each of fabrics for hedgehog (hedgehog will be most effective if made
from 3 fabrics with graduating values; from light (the face) to dark
(the spines); 1/4 yd or several large scraps of a darkest solid fabric
for eyes, noses, and optional glasses; neutral solid background fabric
in a medium tone that is darker than the fox muzzle fabric and lighter
than the eye and nose fabric (students should bring 1 yd for the pillow
and 1/2 yd for the mini quilt); thread for piecing and optional thread
to match darkest solid fabric for applique; pencil with eraser;
paper-friendly scissors; rotary cutter; small ruler (4" x 14" or
similar); small cutting mat (12" x 18" or similar); water soluble fabric
marker or chalk liner; seam ripper; thread snips; sewing machine; iron
(if not included in the classroom)
Workshop 2: Patchwork City
Description:
In this workshop, students will learn some of Elizabeth's favorite tips
and tricks for fabric selection and precision piecing as you make 3
blocks from her new sampler book, Patchwork City. The blocks can be
combined to make a mini sampler, or they can become the start of one of
the larger projects described in the book. Each student is asked to
bring a favorite fat quarter and a coordinating bag of scrap fabric that
will serve as the starting point for his or her project. Students will
also bring a second bag of scraps to share. These second bag of scraps
will create a pool of fabric from which students can draw scraps to add
to/enhance their own fabric selections. Elizabeth will also bring fabric
to share.
Date: Thursday, September 10th
Time: 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Roeland Park Community Center, Multipurpose Room
Cost: $90 members, $100 non-members
Details:
A copy of Elizabeth's book, Patchwork City, is required and needs to be
purchased before the workshop. Elizabeth will not have books available
to be purchased.
Supplies: Patchwork
City book; 1 fat quarter of favorite print fabric*; 1 quart-sized bag of
coordinating scraps**; 1 quart-sized bag of scraps to share with the
rest of the class**; thread for piecing; pencil with eraser;
paper-friendly scissors; rotary cutter; small ruler (4" x 14" or
similar); small cutting mat (12" x 18" or similar); water soluble fabric
marker such as Dritz Mark-B-Gone; seam ripper; thread snips; sewing
machine; iron (if not included in the classroom)
*This
fabric will be the start of your project, so pick something that you
really enjoy. Large prints, prints with fussy-cut-able elements, and
prints with strong graphic elements are encouraged here.
**Scraps
can be of print and/or solid fabrics and should be no smaller than 2"
at the smallest dimension. Scraps to share do not need to coordinate
with your other fabrics or with each other, but please bring fabric you
think others might light to work with. Leftover precut pieces or scraps
from other quilts are perfect for this. If you don't have scraps, 3-4
fat eighths can be substituted.
